Five-year mortality hazard is reduced in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients receiving double- vs single-lung transplants
Journal of Surgical Research Mar 28, 2019
Crawford TC, et al. - Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) undergoing double-lung transplant (DLT) were compared regarding survival to those undergoing single-lung transplantation (SLT) since the inception of the lung allocation score. Using the United Network for Organ Sharing database, they identified 4832 COPD patients. Over the study period, 3554 underwent lung transplantation, including 1358 SLTs (38%) and 2196 DLTs (62%). This is the largest survival analysis of COPD recipients since the inception of the lung allocation score indicating significantly reduced hazard for 5-y mortality in recipients who underwent DLT as compared to SLT.
