First trimester serum angiogenic and anti-angiogenic factors in women with chronic hypertension for the prediction of preeclampsia
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nov 15, 2019
Nzelu D, et al. - Researchers sought to determine if among women with chronic hypertension, those who develop superimposed preeclampsia differ from those that did not in terms of serum concentrations of placental growth factor (PLGF) and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFLT-1) and sFLT-1/PLGF ratio at 11+0 to 13+6 weeks’ gestation. Further, they compared these values to those in normotensive controls. The study population included 650 women with chronic hypertension (202 developed superimposed preeclampsia and 448 did not develop preeclampsia) and 142 normotensive controls. As per the analysis, first trimester concentrations of both PLGF and sFLT-1 were lower among women with chronic hypertension; this was particularly observed among those who subsequently developed preeclampsia.
