Financial hardship among nonelderly adults with CKD in the United States
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Jun 18, 2021
Acquah I, Valero-Elizondo J, Javed Z, et al. - This cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the scope as well as determinants of financial hardship in a nationally representative sample of adults suffering from CKD. Participants were non-elderly adults with CKD, who were selected from the 2014-2018 National Health Interview Survey. There were 1,425 persons, representing about 2.1 million Americans, who reported a CKD diagnosis within the past year. Among these, financial hardship from medical bills was encountered by 46.9%; inability to pay medical bills at all was reported by 20.9%. Findings revealed that financial hardship from medical bills, which was strongly associated with lack of insurance, was faced by about half of the non-elderly US population with CKD. There is a requirement for evidence-based clinical and policy interventions to address these hardships.
