Final report of a trial of intensive vs standard blood-pressure contro
New England Journal of Medicine May 29, 2021
Lewis CE, Fine LJ, Cheung AK, et al. - Researchers herein present the final outcomes of a trial of intensive vs standard systolic blood-pressure control. A total of 9,361 individuals who were at elevated risk for cardiovascular disease but did not have diabetes or previous stroke were randomized to adhere to an intensive treatment target (systolic blood pressure, <120 mm Hg) or a standard treatment target (systolic blood pressure, <140 mm Hg). According to findings, lower rates of major adverse cardiovascular events and lower all-cause mortality were achieved by targeting a systolic blood pressure of less than 120 mm Hg, vs targeting a systolic blood pressure of less than 140 mm Hg, both during receipt of the randomly assigned therapy as well as after the trial. The intensive-treatment group was found to have higher rates of some adverse events.
