Final report of a prospective randomized study on thoracic radiotherapy target volume for limited-stage small cell lung cancer with radiation dosimetric analyses
Cancer Feb 03, 2020
Hu X, Bao Y, Xuet YJ, et al. - In view of the controversies regarding the thoracic radiotherapy (TRT) target volume for limited-stage small-cell lung cancer (SCLC), researchers here presented the final results of a prospective randomized trial on the TRT target volume before and after induction chemotherapy. Following two cycles of etoposide and cisplatin, patients were randomized to receive TRT to the postchemotherapy or prechemotherapy tumor volume in a study arm and a control arm. Early termination of the study was done because of slow accrual. From 2002 to 2017, randomization of 159 and 150 patients to the study arm or the control arm was done, respectively. Using positron emission tomography/computed tomography, staging of 21.4% and 19.1% of patients was done, respectively. Findings suggest limiting TRT to the postchemotherapy tumor volume and support the routine application of involved-field radiotherapy for limited-stage SCLC.
