Fibromyalgia increases the risk of surgical complications following total knee arthroplasty: A nationwide database study
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 22, 2019
Sodhi N, et al. - A total of 305,510 subjects were analyzed to study the impact of fibromyalgia on the risk of surgical complications after total knee arthroplasty. Increased odds of developing surgical complications like bearing wear and peri-prosthetic osteolysis were observed in fibromyalgia cases vs matched cohort. They also noticed significantly greater odds of developing a revision of tibial insert, mechanical loosening, infection/inflammation, and dislocations as well as other complications. Enhanced pre-operative medical and surgical optimization were suggested for the surgeons while handling fibromyalgia patients.
