Fibromyalgia increases the risk of surgical complications following total knee arthroplasty: A nationwide database study
Journal of Arthroplasty May 12, 2019
Sodhi N, et al. - Researchers compared the risk of developing surgical complications post-total knee arthroplasty (TKA) among fibromyalgia patients vs a matched control cohort. They identified patients who had a TKA between 2005 and 2014, by utilizing the Medicare Standard Analytical Files of the PearlDiver supercomputer. Overall 305,510 patients remained after 1:1 propensity score matching based on the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, age, gender, and the Charlson Comorbidity Index. According to the findings, a greater risk of developing certain surgical complications post-TKA can be seen in fibromyalgia patients and thus, it is important that these patients have awareness of the increased postoperative risks and enhanced preoperative medical and surgical optimization be considered by surgeons.
