Fibromyalgia as a predictor of increased postoperative complications, readmission rates, and hospital costs in patients undergoing posterior lumbar spine fusion
Spine Feb 08, 2019
Donnally CJ, et al. - Medicare data (2005–2014) from a national database was analyzed to assess the impact of a contemporary diagnosis of fibromyalgia (FM) on postoperative complications, readmission rates or cost following primary 1 to 2 level lumbar fusions in an elective setting. They noticed a higher incidence of acute posthemorrhagic anemia and readmission rates in FM cases as compared to controls within the first 30-days postoperative. They found no significant difference in wound-related complications within first 30-days (0.19% vs 0.23%) or with the length of stay (3.60 vs 3.53 days). They observed FM subjects with higher rates of pneumonia and incurred reimbursement of 5.31% more in-hospital charges as compared to the control cohort, within 90-days postoperative.
