Fibromyalgia and obesity: A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis
Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism Mar 12, 2021
D'Onghia M, Ciaffi J, Lisi L, et al. - Through searching MedLine, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Web of Science databases up to September 2020, researchers sought to find all available evidence on the connection between fibromyalgia (FM) and obesity, including epidemiological links, the impact of obesity on severity of FM and how FM symptoms are impacted by weight loss strategies. Three hundred ninety-three studies were reviewed, and 41 articles were deemed eligible for inclusion in the final analysis. According to the findings, the overall prevalence of obesity in FM was 35.7%; higher numbers were reported for the US. Most studies showed that obesity is linked to different domains of FM, including composite measures of activity, pain severity, tender point count, stiffness, fatigue, physical functioning/disability, sleep, cognitive dysfunction, and quality of life; on average, the strength of associations were weak. Obesity and FM-related symptoms can interact, according to available evidence. Patients with FM should be advised to lose weight.
