Fiber intake and the risk of head and neck cancer in the prostate, lung, colorectal, and ovarian (PLCO) cohort
International Journal of Cancer Feb 02, 2019
Kawakita D, et al. - Data from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening trial were used to assess if fiber intake has any impact on the risk of head and neck cancer (HNC). Complete dietary information was available for 101,700 participants, and 186 of these developed HNC during follow-up from January 1998 to May 2011. They noted a significant trend for decreased HNC risks in correlation with higher intake of total fiber, insoluble fiber, and soluble fiber. Oral cavity and pharyngeal cases consistently mirrored these inverse associations, however, in laryngeal cases, a weaker impact of fiber intake was observed. Smoking and drinking did not impact the effect of total fiber intake on HNC risk. Dietary fiber intake was supported as being protective against HNC risk in this study.
