Fetal growth patterns in pregnancies with first-trimester bleeding
Obstetrics and Gynecology Jun 01, 2018
Bever AM, et al. - The relationship between first-trimester vaginal bleeding and fetal growth patterns were ascertained via performing a secondary analysis of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Fetal Growth Studies–Singletons, a prospective cohort study of low-risk, nonobese women with healthy lifestyles. Researchers recognized 2,307 eligible women, of whom, 410 (17.8%) reported first-trimester bleeding (176 bled for 1 day and 234 bled for more than 1 day). Findings revealed the correlation of more than 1 day of first-trimester vaginal bleeding with smaller estimated fetal weight late in pregnancy driven by smaller abdominal circumference. The decrease in birth weight was small in magnitude, albeit comparable with observed decreases associated with maternal smoking.
