Fetal growth and feto-placental circulation in pregnancies following bariatric surgery: A prospective study

BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Jan 24, 2020

Maric T, et al. - Researchers designed a prospective study including 162 pregnant women (54 with previous bariatric surgery and 108 with no surgery) in order to study the intrauterine fetal growth pattern and fetoplacental circulation in pregnancies following bariatric surgery. They assessed the participants at 11-14, 20-24, 30-33, and 35-37 weeks of gestation and performed an oral glucose tolerance test at 27-30 weeks. At three time points in pregnancy, they measured fetal head and abdominal circumference, femur length, estimated fetal weight and feto-placental Dopplers. Findings revealed that relative to women with no history of bariatric surgery, those with previous bariatric surgery had smaller fetuses during pregnancy and at birth, and this may be linked to the lower maternal glucose levels observed in the former population. Maternal weight-loss surgery seemed not affecting the feto-placental circulation.
