Fetal cardiac tumor: Echocardiography, clinical outcome and genetic analysis in 53 cases
Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology Jun 18, 2019
Chen J, et al. - In order to determine the imaging and clinical features of fetal cardiac tumors, researchers examined 53 women pregnant with a fetus affected by cardiac tumor(s) using standardized fetal echocardiography (FE). In addition, they determined if tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is associated with cardiac rhabdomyoma in the fetus. TSC genetic testing was done on fetuses, mothers and fathers, including other relevant family members if necessary. The most common cardiac tumor was cardiac rhabdomyoma in the fetus. They noted a strong correlation between cardiac rhabdomyoma and TSC; this correlation was noted irrespective of the presence of single or multiple tumors. They recommend prenatal genetic testing for TSC of both fetus and family members for fetuses with suspected cardiac rhabdomyoma identified by FE. Clinicians may counsel and plan for neonatal treatment in assistence of a positive genetic diagnosis.
