Fertility treatment with clomiphene citrate and childhood epilepsy: A nationwide cohort study
Human Reproduction Jun 18, 2021
Kettner LO, Matthiesen NB, Ramlau-Hansen CH, et al. - Researchers conducted a nationwide cohort study including all pregnancies in Denmark from July 1, 1995 resulting in a live-born singleton child before December 31, 2013, with the aim to determine if fertility treatment with clomiphene citrate is linked with an elevated risk of childhood epilepsy, including specific subtypes of epilepsy. The Danish National Prescription Registry was used to identify children conceived after fertility treatment with clomiphene citrate. Among a total of 1,081,291 pregnancies, 12,644 children (1.2%) had development of epilepsy. Findings suggest a possible association of fertility treatment with clomiphene citrate with a small increased risk of idiopathic generalized epilepsy and focal epilepsy in childhood.
