Fertility-sparing surgery for treatment of non-epithelial ovarian cancer: Oncological and reproductive outcomes in a prospective nationwide population-based cohort study
Gynecologic Oncology Nov 09, 2019
Johansen G, et al. - In a prospective, nationwide, population-based study, researchers compared women who received fertility-sparing surgery (FSS) vs radical surgery (RS) for treatment of non-epithelial ovarian cancer (NEOC), focusing on the oncologic outcome, as well as examined reproductive outcomes in women following FSS. They used the Swedish Quality Register for Gynecological Cancer and selected all women ages 18–40 who had stage I NEOC and had received either FSS or RS for the same between 2008 and 2015. Findings revealed no link of FSS with worse oncologic outcomes, compared with RS, in young women with early stage NEOC. Both groups had excellent prognosis, with an overall survival of 98%. Women treated with FSS exhibited maintained natural fertility, only 12% needed assisted reproductive technology treatment.
