Fertility-related experiences after breast cancer diagnosis in the Sister and Two Sister Studies
Cancer Aug 01, 2019
Bressler LH, Mersereau JE, Anderson C, et al. - Researchers used age-adjusted log-binomial regression and estimated the prevalence of fertility counseling among US women diagnosed with breast cancer before age 45 years. They found that fertility discussion was related to younger age and lower parity. The presence of interest in future fertility at the time of diagnosis was reported by nearly 20% of respondents, but counseling about the influence of treatment on their fertility was not received by all of these individuals. Among women of reproductive age who were diagnosed with breast cancer and were seen across multiple treatment settings, the majority had not discussed fertility with a health care provider and neither used fertility preservation strategies. A crucial aspect of patient education is discussing the potential influence of cancer treatment on future fertility.
