Femoral nerve blocks for the treatment of acute prehospital pain: A systematic review with meta‐analysis
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Apr 29, 2020
Raatiniemi L, Magnusson V, Hyldmo PK, et al. - Researchers investigated the effect and safety of the femoral nerve block (FNB) vs other forms of analgesia (or no treatment) for managing acute lower extremity pain in adult patients in the prehospital setting. Conducting a systematic review, inclusion of four studies, three RCTs and one case series with a total of 252 patients, was performed. Low number of patients were involved and incomplete results were reported in one of the included studies. High success rates were reported in all of the studies. In three of four studies, physicians performed the FNBs with training in regional anesthesia, which may have resulted in the high success rates. The level of training of the providers was not reported in one study. Limited evidence was thus available concerning the effect and safety of femoral nerve block in the prehospital setting and hence, currently no conclusion could be made regarding the efficacy of FNB compared with other relevant options for treating prehospital pain.
