Femoral nerve blocks for the treatment of acute prehospital pain: A systematic review with meta‐analysis

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Apr 20, 2020

Raatiniemi L, Magnusson V, Hyldmo PK, et al. - Researchers compared femoral nerve block (FNB) vs other forms of analgesia (or no treatment), in terms of effect and safety, for managing acute lower extremity pain among adult patients in the prehospital setting. They analyzed 4 studies including 252 patients. They used Cochrane and GRADE methods to evaluate the results. The likely superior effectiveness of FNB vs metamizole for reducing pain was revealed in two RCTs (114 patients). FNB with lidocaine and magnesium sulphate was compared with FNB with lidocaine alone in one RCT (48 patients), and it was only incorporated here for information concerning adverse effects. The included studies documented few adverse events. Experts realized that evidence concerning the effectiveness as well as adverse consequences of prehospital FNB is limited. They also noted the lack of investigations comparing prehospital FNB vs inhaled analgesics, opioids or ketamine.
