Female reproductive structures found in inguinal hernia sacs: A retrospective review
Journal of Pediatric Surgery May 02, 2019
Zeng K, et al. - Via this retrospective chart review of all cases of herniorrhaphy in female patients less than the age of 18, researchers sought to confirm the reported 15%–20% incidence of adnexal tissue in hernia sacs in female infants undergoing herniorrhaphy. In addition, they sought to further describe the clinical characteristics of this population. They identified the overall incidence of 11.2% of patients with gynecological findings during herniorrhaphy, which is comparable to previously reported figures. Compared to the general population and to those without gynecological findings during herniorrhaphy, these patients had a significantly lower gestational age at birth, lower age at surgery, and a lower rate of right-sided hernias.
