Female genital mutilation (FGM) in UK children: A review of a dedicated paediatric service for FGM
Archives of Diseases in Childhood Jun 27, 2020
Ali S, Patel R, Armitage AJ, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to characterize the presentation and management of children with suspected or confirmed female genital mutilation (FGM) referred to a specialist paediatric clinic. The data collected included referral source, age, ethnicity, FGM circumstances and clinical findings as per the WHO FGM classification. One hundred forty-eight children attended the clinic of whom 55 (37.2%) had confirmed FGM between September 2014 and January 2019. Based on UK prevalence estimates, the number of children with FGM was significantly lower than expected. Most children had undergone FGM prior to UK entry, and most of the cases were initially reported by the child or the family themselves. Such findings indicate the absence of large-scale evidence of FGM practice in the UK and are consistent with growing evidence of FGM abandonment among post-migration communities.
