Febrile Seizure Risk after Vaccination in Children One to Five Months
Pediatric Neurology Aug 26, 2017
Duffy J et al. – In this article, the authors determined the risk of febrile seizure post vaccination in 1– to 5 month–old children who were recommended to receive 6 different vaccines. In this study, a large relative risk of febrile seizure on the day of and day after vaccination was observed in patients aged 3 to 5 months; however, the risk was small in absolute terms. Although post–vaccination febrile seizure is not a concern for majority of children receiving vaccines, the clinicians should consider the risk of febrile seizures while evaluating and treating children prone to seizures precipitated by fever.
Methods
- Self–controlled risk interval method was used to compare the incidence of febrile seizure during post–vaccination days 0 to 1 (risk interval) versus days 14 to 20 (control interval).
Results
- A total of 15 cases in patients aged 3 to 5 months were identified who received a median of 4 vaccines simultaneously.
- The incidence rate ratio of febrile seizure after vaccination and the attributable risk was 23 and 3.92 febrile seizure cases per 100,000 persons vaccinated, respectively.
