International Journal of Cancer Oct 21, 2019
Holzapfel J, Kandels D, Schmidt R, et al. - Experts investigated the natural history of pediatric low-grade glioma (LGG) and questioned whether brainstem location confirmed unfavorable for survival within the framework of the comprehensive population-based German SIOP-LGG 2004 management strategy. A cohort 116 patients were diagnosed with LGG of the pons and medulla oblongata. The treatment algorithm carried high overall survival for pediatric brainstem LGG. Wide neurosurgical resection did grow further postoperative neurologic deficiencies however not overall survival in this often-chronic disease. More than half of all cases could be securely followed by observation, whereas multimodal adjuvant treatment could manage progressive tumors. Moreover, molecular evaluation should validate low-grade diagnosis and may discover patterns prognostic for the evolution of malignant.
