Fatty liver index and development of cardiovascular disease in Koreans without preexisting myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke: A large population-based study

Cardiovascular Diabetology May 06, 2020

Kim JH, Moon JS, Byun SJ, et al. - In a large population-based study, researchers explored the connection between fatty liver index (FLI), a validated marker of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. There were 3,011,588 individuals in the Korean National Health Insurance System cohort identified with no history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) who had health examinations from 2009 to 2011. There were 46,010 cases of MACEs (7,148 cases of cardiovascular death, 16,574 of non-fatal MI, and 22,288 of ischemic stroke) during the median follow-up period of 6 years. A linear link was found between higher FLI values and higher incidence of the primary endpoint. The results suggest that the FLI, a surrogate marker of NAFLD, has a prognostic ability to identify people at higher risk for cardiovascular events.
