Fathers' alcohol use and suicidal behavior in offspring during youth and young adulthood
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Sep 13, 2019
Landberg J, et al. - Via performing a cohort study involving 68,910 Swedish citizens born between 1970 and 1985 with fathers that participated in conscription for compulsory military training in 1969/1970, researchers determined how various indicators of fathers’ alcohol use were associated with suicidal behavior in offspring during youth and young adulthood. During conscription, they collected data on fathers' alcohol use. They found that fathers' alcohol use was associated with the increased risk of suicidal behavior among offspring in youth and young adulthood. Offspring to fathers who had been apprehended for drunkenness ≥ 2—or with an alcohol-related hospitalization—were observed to be at the highest risk for suicidal behavior.
