Fatal choking in infants and children treated in a pediatric intensive care unit: A 7- year experience
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology May 04, 2018
Wu X, et al. - Experts evaluated the deaths resulting from foreign body aspiration in children. A review of children who presented to the pediatric intensive care unit of a university hospital due to fatal foreign bodies aspiration during the period of 2010–2017 was conducted. The age ranged from 1–63 months, with mean of 15.2 months. To reduce the mortality of foreign bodies aspiration, prevention and early recognition remained a critical factor. Milk, nuts and fruits were the common foreign bodies included, with a majority of foreign bodies having round shapes. Findings suggested that the death of all patients was due to asphyxia or serious complications after foreign bodies aspiration.
