Fasting plasma glucose level in the range of 90–99 mg/dL and the risk of the onset of type 2 diabetes: Population-based Panasonic cohort study 2

Journal of Diabetes Investigation Oct 29, 2021

Munekawa C, Okada H, Hamaguchi M, et al. - Japanese people with a fasting plasma glucose level of 90–99 mg/dL exhibited a progressively higher risk of type 2 diabetes with an increasing level of fasting plasma glucose concentration.

  • This long-term retrospective cohort study included 37,148 Japanese persons with a normal plasma glucose level, to assess the link between a fasting glucose level of 90–99 mg/dL and the onset of type 2 diabetes.

  • In those with the concentration ranging from 90 to 99 mg/dL, per 1 mg/dL elevation in fasting plasma glucose level was associated with increase in diabetes onset risk by 9.0%.

  • For developing diabetes, 1.53, 1.76, 1.89, 3.17, and 3.41 were the adjusted hazard ratios at fasting plasma glucose levels of 90–91, 92–93, 94–95, 96–97, and 98–99 mg/dL, respectively, vs a fasting glucose level of ≤89 mg/dL.

  • In obese participants, adjusted hazards ratios for developing diabetes were 1.56, 1.82, 2.05, 3.53, and 3.28 at fasting plasma glucose levels of 90–91, 92–93, 94–95, 96–97, and 98–99 mg/dL, respectively.
