Fascial closure in giant ventral hernias after preoperative botulinum toxin A and progressive pneumoperitoneum: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Surgery Apr 22, 2021
van Rooijen MMJ, Yurtkap Y, Allaeys M, et al. - The perioperative efficacy of the preoperative use of progressive pneumoperitoneum or Botulinum Toxin A injections in ventral hernia repair was investigated via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. Systematically searching Embase, Medline Ovid, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and Google Scholar, they included 20 studies from the 905 identified studies, comprising the use progressive pneumoperitoneum (n = 11), Botulinum Toxin A (n = 6), and both techniques (n = 3). Fascial closure was facilitated by preoperative progressive pneumoperitoneum and Botulinum Toxin A with no induction of a significant number of adverse events. Botulinum Toxin A qualifies for low-threshold use, yet progressive pneumoperitoneum should be utilized cautiously because of a larger number of complications. Researchers can not make definitive recommendations owing to the low quality of included studies, presence of bias, and scarcity of comparative information.
