Family history of type 2 diabetes impacts depression risk — here's how

Why this study matters

Overweight/obese patients with a family history of T2DM, especially if not diagnosed with T2DM and/or MDD, are good candidates for educational initiatives and timely intervention, and will benefit with an improved quality of life.

Study design

Ninety-six overweight/obese patients, 25-50 years of age, without clinical depression or T2DM were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The associations between symptoms of depression and IR, with family histories of T2DM and major depressive disorder (MDD) were determined.

Results and conclusion

Patients with symptoms of depression had a significant association with IR. Moreover, IR was associated with symptoms of depression in patients with family histories of T2DM.
