Familial risks of second primary cancers and mortality in ovarian cancer patients
Clinical Epidemiology Oct 19, 2018
Zheng G, et al. – Using the Swedish Family-Cancer Database, researchers studied the effect of family history on the risk of second primary cancers (SPCs) and mortality in 11,300 patients with ovarian cancer. Study participants were followed for SPC diagnoses until the end of 2015. Data showed a family history of a particular cancer contributed to an increased risk of SPC at the same site, in spite of the non-inclusion of possible high-risk families. Therefore, taking a family history at the time of diagnosis of ovarian cancer might alert practitioners to disease management, which may help the patient and their family members. Findings revealed that the impact of a family history of cancer on the risk of same cancer as SPC was significant for colon, lung, and breast cancers.
