Familial hypercholesterolaemia in patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack
European Journal of Neurology Oct 26, 2017
Toell T, et al. - In this study, the clinicians aimed to examine how many patients with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) were influenced by familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and whether systematic screening for FH was warranted in these patients. Based on clinical criteria, the frequency of potential FH in patients with acute ischemic stroke or TIA was 11.5% and that of probable/definite FH (1.3%) was similar to recently reported counts for patients with acute coronary syndrome (1.6%). Using the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network Algorithm (DLCNA), FH screening was feasible in clinical routine and needed to be considered as part of the usual diagnostic work-up.
