Falls and risk factors of falls for urban and rural community-dwelling older adults in China
BMC Geriatrics Jan 08, 2020
Zhang L, et al. - Since the serious health results of falls among older people has made it a public health concern, and yet there is little knowledge regarding the rural-urban differentials in falls among older people in China, therefore, researchers intended to fill the voids of previous literature by examining falls and the related risk factors among Chinese seniors, with a special emphasis on the rural-urban variations. They used data from the 2010 wave of Chinese Longitudinal Survey on Urban and Rural Elderly. They found that rural vs urban older individuals had a higher incidence of falls. Fall outside of the home was more likely in older people in both settings. Fall on the road was more likely in urban older people whereas their rural counterparts reported more falls in the yard. Among Chinese rural and urban older individuals, there exist differences in the incidence, locations, circumstances, and outcomes of falls. But most risk factors for falls displayed similar influences on rural and urban elders’ odds of falling.
