Falciparum but not vivax malaria increases the risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in women followed prospectively from the first trimester
BMC Medicine Apr 30, 2021
Harrington WE, Moore KA, Min AM, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate whether falciparum but not vivax malaria increases the risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in women followed prospectively from the first trimester. Researchers evaluated the association between malaria in pregnancy and the development of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in a large, prospectively followed cohort. They examined correlations between falciparum and vivax malaria during pregnancy and the odds of gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, or eclampsia using logistic regression amongst all women and then stratified by gravidity. In this study, there were 23,262 singleton pregnancies in women who presented during the first trimester and were followed fortnightly. It was shown that during pregnancy, falciparum but not vivax malaria is correlated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
