Failure to rescue, hospital volume, and in-hospital mortality after transcatheter aortic valve implantation
American Journal of Cardiology Jun 21, 2018
Ando T, et al. - Researchers used the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database from 2011 to 2015 to identify patients who had trans-arterial transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Their goal was to analyze the difference of in-patient mortality and failure to rescue (FTR) among hospitals with different TAVI volumes. Across different TAVI volume hospital, a similarity was reported in regard to mean age, percentage of female, and Elixhauser comorbidity index, and no difference was seen in the incidence of major perioperative complications. They also noted that with higher hospital volume, the adjusted rate of in-patient mortality was significantly lower. However, among different TAVI volume hospitals, the observed FTR was the same. Overall, the variation of in-hospital mortality among different hospital volumes was not explained by FTR.
