Failure to conceive in women with CF is associated with pancreatic insufficiency and advancing age
Journal of Cystic Fibrosis Oct 28, 2018
Shteinberg M, et al. - In this retrospective multinational study from 11 cystic fibrosis (CF) centers across Israel, France, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom, researchers assessed the prevalence and factors associated with female subfertility among women with CF. They define sub/infertility as not achieving a spontaneous pregnancy following 1 year of unprotected sexual intercourse. Patients were examined for genetics, pancreatic insufficiency, prevalence of diabetes (CF-related diabetes), lung function, nutritional status measured by body mass index, sputum bacterial colonization, and rate of pulmonary exacerbations. In contrast to the expected 5% to 15% subfertility rate in the general population, they observed a higher prevalence of subfertility (35%) among women with CF. The factors that were identified to have an association with subfertility in women with CF included older age and pancreatic insufficiency.
