Failure patterns of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma treated with radical radiotherapy by intensity modulated radiotherapy technique using focal volume and dosimetric method

Head & Neck May 31, 2019

Tandon S, et al. - Given the complications in the assessment of failures of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma treated with radical radiotherapy by intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) technique, researchers investigated if a combination of focal point and dosimetric method could simplify failure analysis. They enrolled 111 patients with locally advanced HNC treated with chemoradiation using IMRT and assessed the recurrence volume in patients with documented failure using focal point and dosimetric method. As per current classification, most recurrences were high dose failures. This indicates intrinsic radioresistance. A marginal number of failures could possibly be prevented and required modification of existing IMRT workflow.
