Faecal microbiota transplant decreases mortality in severe and fulminant Clostridioides difficile infection in critically ill patients
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics Oct 18, 2019
Tixier EN, et al. - In critically ill patients with severe or fulminant Clostridioides difficile infection, researchers compared the outcomes of antibiotics and faecal microbiota transplantation compared with antibiotics alone (standard of care). The study sample consisted of 48 patients hospitalised with severe or fulminant C difficile infection who needed care in intensive care unit. Findings suggested that patients receiving faecal microbiota transplantation experienced a 77% reduction in mortality odds with a number needed to treat 3 to prevent one death. Faecal microbiota transplantation has a mortality advantage over the standard treatment for serious and fulminant C difficile infection and should be considered in patients with a critical illness.
