Factors predictive of the development of surgical site infection in thyroidectomy – An analysis of NSQIP database
International Journal of Surgery Nov 22, 2018
Myssiorek D, et al. - As surgical site infection (SSI) is an uncommon but serious complication of thyroidectomy, researchers queried NSQIP Participant Use File (PUF) from 2012 to 2015 to identify thyroidectomy with CPT 60210, 12, 20, 25, 40, 52, 54, 60 in patients ≥18 years and clean (Wound Classification 1) wounds. In addition, they performed a subgroup analysis for patients that underwent thyroidectomy for cancer. Findings suggest a rare occurrence of SSI following thyroidectomy with a clean wound. Patients undergoing thyroidectomy should not be administered antibiotics routinely and only high risk patients or those patients with contaminated wounds should be considered for the antibiotic administration.
