Factors predicting length of stay in bronchiolitis
Respiratory Medicine Feb 06, 2020
Masarweh K, Gur M, Leiba R, et al. - Researchers undertook this single tertiary medical center retrospective study, using a data acquisition tool, ie, MDClone, to define factors related to the risk of hospitalization and length of stay (LOS) in bronchiolitis. Participants were infants discharged between January 2001 and March 2019 with a diagnosis of bronchiolitis. Experts found a correlation of oxygen saturation, age, and fever with the risk of hospitalization. They also identified the correlation of saturation, fever, gestational age and birth weight with LOS. Arabs vs Jews demonstrated higher rates of hospitalization and longer LOS. In a multivariate model, LOS was predicted by saturation, fever, gestational age and age. The prediction of LOS for previously healthy infants was enabled by saturation and ethnicity. An increase in LOS was reported in relation to prematurity and cardiac anomalies. Experts inferred that the prediction of disease severity and LOS in bronchiolitis may be accomplished using population-based data. Targeting novel therapies may be helped by focusing on children carrying the greatest risk.
