Factors mediating type 2 diabetes remission and relapse after gastric bypass surgery
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Nov 05, 2019
Pessoa BM, Browning MG, Mazzini GS, et al. - Via performing a retrospective review of 621 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) who underwent gastric bypass (RYGB) between 1993 and 2017, researchers sought to determine the factors linked with T2D remission and relapse after RYGB. Medication discontinuation and/or HbA1c < 6.5% T2D defined remission; recurrent medication use and/or HbA1c ≥ 6.5% defined relapse. Findings of this longitudinal retrospective analysis revealed that T2D remission and relapse following RYGB are influenced by preoperative insulin use and age, one-year weight loss, and regain. For improving the rates and durability of T2D remission, they emphasize referring patients at a younger age, before insulin is needed, and optimizing both weight loss and weight maintenance after RYGB.
