Factors leading to decreased rates of immediate postmastectomy reconstruction
Journal of Surgical Research Apr 08, 2019
Tung L, et al. - Researchers investigated if immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) rates differ between their public hospital and private cancer center, which share a common faculty with a consistent management philosophy in multidisciplinary care. The factors affecting postmastectomy reconstruction and IBR rates were determined in addition. They identified 293 mastectomy patients. They observed a higher rate of breast reconstruction at the private cancer (56.6%) center than that at the public hospital (36.2%). Higher IBR rates were noted for the private cancer center (93.6%) and for patients with private insurance than those noted for the public hospital (40.8%) and for those without insurance (86.7% vs 45.5%). Observations revealed the independent predictive value of age >50 y and radiotherapy for less likelihood of any breast reconstruction.
