Factors influencing the incidence of Hirschsprung associated enterocolitis (HAEC)
Journal of Pediatric Surgery Mar 01, 2019
Le-Nguyen A, et al. - Researchers sought to characterize risk factors for Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) and investigated the influence of earlier pull-through surgery on the risks of developing postoperative HAEC. Performing comparative study of 171 Hirschsprung patients treated from 1990 to 2017, they identified a significant association of the risk of developing preoperative HAEC with congenital malformations. No correlation of timing of surgery with a higher risk of developing pre- and postoperative HAEC was noted. For preoperative HAEC, predisposing factors were associated malformations and lower birth weight, whereas, for postoperative HAEC, intestinal obstruction was the predisposing factor.
