Factors influencing adherence to continuous positive airway pressure treatment in obstructive sleep apnea and mortality associated with treatment failure - A national registry-based cohort study

Sleep Medicine Jul 20, 2018

Palm A, et al. - A registry-based cohort study was performed to find protective and risk factors against the discontinuation of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and to determine the mortality risk in those non-adherent to CPAP therapy. Data came from 37 centers across Sweden with OSA patients on CPAP in the Swedevox Swedish national registry between July 2010 and March 2017. The strongest identified protective factor against CPAP failure was humidifier use. It was noted that increasing age, more severe OSA and overweight up to body mass index of 35 also protect against CPAP failure. Risk factors for CPAP failure were female gender and presence of hypertension. Researchers found that increased mortality is linked to failure to adhere to CPAP.
