Factors driving frequent attendance at emergency departments for patients with head and neck cancer
Head & Neck Aug 23, 2019
Tan AL, Iyer NG, Putri N, et al. - Because patients with head and neck cancer have a higher risk of emergency department (ED) frequent attender (FA), researchers tested the assumption that FAs present with issues different from non-FAs. Using de-identified registry merged with electronic medical record data, a retrospective cohort study was carried out on Singapore residents with head and neck cancers. In order to identify factors associated with FA, a competing risk regression analysis was conducted. Data reported that 13% of patients with head and neck cancer were FAs. Charlson comorbidity index (3+), and socioeconomic status (SES) were risk factors for FA. Overall, the authors concluded that more likely to be FA were patients with higher comorbidity scores or higher SES. FAs were more probable to have respiratory complaints, probably linked to therapy for cancer, or smoking status.
