BMC Endocrine Disorders Jul 10, 2018
Liu CL, et al. - In this population-based cross-sectional study, researchers assessed the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in patients with dementia and examined factors correlated with the development of DM in the study population. Participants in the study were patients with vascular dementia were identified in Taiwan’s 1997 to 2008 National Health Insurance Research Database. They were divided into a DM group and a non-DM group. Significant links of gender, socioeconomic status, and comorbidities with DM in patients with dementia were found. The study findings suggested that subjects with dementia who are female, have low income, and have comorbid renal or metabolic disease need to have routine glucose impairment exams to assist in managing blood glucose and to prevent adverse glycemic events.
