Factors associated with treatment and control of hypertension in a healthy elderly population free of cardiovascular disease: A cross-sectional study
American Journal of Hypertension Dec 12, 2019
Chowdhury EK, Nelson MR, Ernst ME, et al. - By examining baseline data from Australia and the United States in the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) study, researchers analyzed antihypertensive treatment and control in elderly hypertensive participants free from overt cardiovascular disease (CVD), and defined factors associated with both untreated and treated but uncontrolled high blood pressure (BP). Data from over 19,000 people aged ≥ 65 years were assessed. Hypertension was detected in 74% of participants, and it was untreated in 29% of these. They detected BP ≥ 140/90 mmHg in 53% of treated participants. Older age, male, black race (vs white), using antihypertensive monotherapy (vs multiple), and residing in Australia (vs US) were all identified as factors associated with treated but uncontrolled BP. In healthy elderly individuals without CVD, findings revealed the occurrence of high levels of untreated and treated but uncontrolled BP. Better BP control may thus be achieved in the primary prevention of CVD in this population.
