Factors associated with the rates of coronary artery bypass graft and percutaneous coronary intervention
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Dec 06, 2019
Kim AM, et al. - Researchers used data from the National Health Insurance database in Korea to determine the factors related to the rates of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Age-sex standardized rates of CABG and PCI were computed; via regression analysis, they determined factors related to the CABG and PCI rates. Findings revealed a positive link between the PCI rate and the number of hospital beds, suggesting that the supply of beds may be the driver of the use of PCI. The overuse of PCI due to the lack of the providers of CABG was also suggested by the observed inverse link between the PCI rate and the number of cardiothoracic surgeons. Experts recommended adopting policy measures to optimize the use of revascularization procedures, the selection of which should essentially be dependent on the patient’s needs.
