Factors associated with progression and outcomes of early stage primary biliary cholangitis
Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Oct 03, 2019
Gatselis NK, Goet JC, Zachou K, et al. - Data from 1,615 individuals with early-stage primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) (on the basis of their normal levels of albumin and bilirubin), obtained at the time of initial assessment or treatment, from the Global PBC Study Group database (including patients at 19 liver centers in North American and European countries) was collected in order to examine the proportion of patients who proceed to moderate or advanced PBC and factors correlated with progression and patient survival. Of the 1,615 patients recognized with early-stage PBC, over the study period, 904 acquired moderate PBC and 201 acquired the advanced disease. Nearly half of the participants with early-stage PBC advanced to a more critical stage within 5 years. Furthermore, progression was correlated with a heightened risk of clinical experience, hence, for patients with early-stage PBC, surveillance is necessary.
