Factors associated with opioid use in pre-surgical knee, hip and spine osteoarthritis patients

Arthritis Care & Research Mar 21, 2019

Power JD, et al. - Investigators assessed pre-surgical cases with end-stage knee (N=577), hip (N=459) and spine (N=168) osteoarthritis (OA) to estimate the factors associated with opioid use in such candidates. They observed 15% of subjects reporting 'sometimes' using opioids whereas 15% reported 'daily' use. They recorded the highest use of opioids among spine OA cases (40%) whereas comparable among knee and hip cases (28% and 30%). They also found the greatest use of opioid overall among younger females, especially among spine cases. They reported an association of greater probability of opioid use with spine OA vs knee OA, obesity, being a contemporary or past smoker, higher symptomatic joint count, higher depressive symptoms, greater pain, and prevailing use of other prescription pain medication.
