Factors associated with opioid use after endoscopic sinus surgery
The Laryngoscope Jul 24, 2019
Raikundalia MD, et al. - In this retrospective medical records study involving 136 patients, researchers identified the clinical factors affecting opioid use after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Participants in the study were stratified into 3 groups based on the number of opioid tablets taken during the first week after surgery: 31 patients (23%) had no opioids, 61 patients (45%) had 1 to 5 tablets, and 44 patients (32%) had more than 5 tablets. To examine factors linked to pain medication usage, univariate and multivariable analyses were performed. After surgery, most FESS patients did not take more than 5 opioid tablets. Increased opioid use was associated with concurrent septoplasty and young age. Knowledge of such factors can assist surgeons to evaluate patterns of opioid prescription and advise their patients on postoperative pain.
