Factors associated with opioid use after endoscopic sinus surgery
The Laryngoscope Mar 18, 2019
Raikundalia MD, et al. - A total of 136 individuals were studied to examine the clinical factors affecting the opioid usage after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in this retrospective medical records study. They divided the candidates into 3 groups based on the number of opioid tablets taken during the first week after surgery: 31 cases took no opioids, 61 subjects took 1-5 tablets, and 44 patients took more than 5 tablets. They did not observe significant variation between the 3 groups due to sex, the extent of surgery, revision surgery, polyp status, and cystic fibrosis. They recorded that most of the cases undergoing FESS did not take more than 5 opioid tablets after surgery. They noted a correlation of concurrent septoplasty and younger age with increased opioid usage.
